4th graders from Hockinson and Tukes Valley helped release 10,000 coho salmon last Friday at an annual event hosted by Jim and Barb Orander. Students also dodged predators in the salmon life cycle obstacle course game, explored aquatic macro-invertebrates, learned about fish anatomy, and surveyed the stream habitat. See more photos here.
Jim is a host for a remote site incubator for coho salmon, receiving 10,000 eggs in January and releasing the fry in March. He invites kids from local schools to come release the coho fry into Salmon Creek and participate in salmon related activities for a fun, hands-on learning experience. Special thanks to Clark Public Utilities for leading the salmon game, and to our wonderful Columbia Springs’ volunteer leads!
